Papa's got a brand new bag... Category: My tuppence | 05th Jun 2009

...but does he really need one? A couple of years ago I bought a little reusable carrier bag, costing all of a quid. It folds up into itself, and is approximately the size of a Satsuma. Whenever I go shopping I make a conscious effort to remember to take this bag with me, and on the few occasions I forget it, or I make an impromptu visit to a shop, I utilise my pockets and hands. Suffice to say, if I am buying more items than I can accommodate about my person I will, as a final resort, use a bag from the shop. The main reason I display such strange behaviour is part of my attempt to limit my impact on the planet – to appease my so-called "inner hippy".

Through observing other people’s bag habits, especially at lunchtime, I have started to find myself become increasingly annoyed. Example: somebody purchasing 1 single item asks for a carrier bag for said item. This is an utterly redundant procedure as either way they will have to carry 1 item. On other occasions I have seen people request a carrier bag for their packet-of-crisps-and-chocolate-bar lunch. On the one occasion I attempted to intervene and educate the offender I was met with a resounding "uh?" and a lack of comprehension that would embarrass even a sea cucumber.

So, next time you're at the check-out I ask simply that you pause to consider if you really need a carrier bag for your purchases.
